The famous H. Upmann brand was founded by the German banker Hermann Upmann and his brother August after they came to Cuba on behalf of a German importing and exporting firm and to set up banking services for tobacco growers, brokers, and cigar makers. Upmann saw the incredible potential for handmade premium cigars shortly after his arrival and bought a cigar factory in 1844.
The new factory, located in the heart of Havana, quickly got to work on creating the new H. Upmann brand, hitting the market that same year in 1844. So that its cigars would stand out in a crowd, H. Upmann Cigars were among the first brands to be packaged in cedar boxes, starting a trend that still persists to this day.
H. Upmann Cigars saw great early success. Throughout the late 1800s, H. Upmann Cigars won over a dozen awards in cigar exhibitions and contests which are still adorned on H. Upmann boxes. At the turn of the century, the H. Upmann brand fell into the ownership of Hermann’s nephews. However, during the outbreak of World War I, H. Upmann went through bankruptcy after spying for the Germans.
H. Upmann Cigars eventually ended up in the hands of Menendez, Garcia y Cia in 1937, makers of the famous Montecristo brand. H. Upmann continued to enjoy popularity and accolades for decades, until Castro’s revolution swept across Cuba and nationalized the nation’s industries. In fact, just before then- President JFK raised the embargo against Cuba, he sent his assistant to buy 1,200 H. Upmann Petite Corona cigars so he could continue enjoying his favorite cigar.
The legendary cigar maker Benji Menendez moved his brands to the Dominican Republic, which is the main home of H. Upmann to this day. Now under the purview of Altadis U.S.A., H. Upmann Cigars has expanded its portfolio to encompass over a dozen delicious blends to with both classic and modern tastes.
Among the most popular in the H. Upmann Cigars lineup is the H. Upmann Vintage Cameroon. Reminiscent of the classic H. Upmann cigars of the 1990s, these beauties wear a top-quality Cameroon wrapper over a Nicaraguan binder and Dominican, Nicaraguan, and Peruvian long fillers. The result is a complex and smooth medium-bodied medley of roasted nuts, sweet cream, leather, cedar, and toast.
Crafted with tobaccos that have been extensively aged over 5 years, the H. Upmann 1844 Anejo is blended for the true connoisseur. A core of Dominican, Nicaraguan, and Honduran long fillers, a chocolatey Pennsylvanian Broadleaf binder, and a zesty Ecuadorian Habano wrapper sum up to a rich and refined medium-full bodied smoke brimming with flavors of cocoa, leather, cinnamon, earth, and sweetness.
There are several more blends to choose from in the top-rated H. Upmann Cigars lineup, each made with expert construction and dedication to quality. Whichever H. Upmann blend strikes your fancy, you can trust that you are in for a good experience. Be a part of history in the making, fill your humidor with H.
