Robusto I expected an excellent smoke given the reviews. Upon receipt I was impressed. That moment was brief as the experience was bitter and lacking character. The smoke output was somewhat decent; aroma presented as stale. I find it surprising that it was voted best of 2014. They're awful. I now am reminded to stick with the tried and true. Monte Rocky and Bolivar are consistently satisfying; lesson learned. 1 5 1

Robusto Dear god where to start on the oliva v series an absolutely amazing cigar. One of the top five cigars I've ever had. There is a legitimate reason this cigar is rated so highly. The draw and construction are among the best I've ever seen or had the pleasure of smoking. The cigar is a full body cigar but the flavor profiles is so expertly crafted you don't even notice. I smoked this cigar all the way to the point it was burning my finger tips and I was still sad to put it down. 5 5 1

Robusto This Oliva V Melanio is an incredible cigar. This cigar packs a nice punch of pepper and spice on the palate but is nice and soothing with the retrohale bringing out some very pleasureful floral notes that ease the burn of the spice. It's a very medium-full bodied cigar with regards to tobacco strength. However it's very full bodied in terms of flavor. Complex yet balance and easy to smoke! 4 5 1

Robusto bought a box of Robustos and let them sit for 35 days and decided to smoke my first one on the 4th of July. Easily one of the best cigars I have smoked. The only thing I didn't like is that it didn't last longer. Robusto Tremendous flavor as you would expect from a cigar of the year winner. Oliva has really been bringing substantial quality and consistency to the table in the past few years culminating with the V line and the melanio. You get a deep rich leather with notes of coffee and chocolate. A retrohale of fragrant wood...not as many flavor changes as some cigars more a building upon flavors that are already near perfect. Try one if you can but in my opinion steer clear of the figurado draw was a bit tight on mine and I had to continuously massage the stick to keep good smoke. 4 5 1

The 2nd third improved greatly with a looser draw and introductions to some creamy flavors. The burn was solid to the end which had more hits of pepper leather and cream 3 5 1

Robusto Great smoke. The flavor is more on the coffee/mocha side. I didn't notice that pleasant change in flavor that I usually taste about halfway through most sticks which was a little disappointing but nothing terrible. For me the draw was very good (I used a punch cutter) and stayed that way throughout the length of the stick. There was a decent amount of smoke but not as much as something like a Liga Privada. This is actually one of my favorite cigars so far! 4 5 1

Robusto I just prefer a darker smoke. It's pretty smooth. I'd buy another if I had a choose on a mild smoke. There at a decent price as well for the way they are made. Plus I'm still young and began with the sugar tipped acids. maybe the older I get the better I can take the flavors more serious. Robusto The construction was very good on this cigar which led to an excellent burn and draw. While I don’t overvalue the appearance of cigars for reviews this is an beautiful cigar to look at while smoking. I enjoyed the box press shape and the double bands aren’t overwhelming. Even though the Serie V Melanio reaches full strength by the end novice and veteran smokers alike should be able to enjoy this vitola. Novice smokers may feel the need to put it down before reaching the last third I don’t see that as a tremendous loss since the cigar displays it’s full array of quality flavors in the first 2/3rds. The abundance of quality flavors in this cigar is not to be taken lightly. However I feel the presentation of them fell somewhat short of what I expected. The Serie V Melanio presented various flavors that I enjoy but the proper dosage of them was incorrect at least for me. This might correct itself in a different size or with more time to rest. I’ve seen this cigar rated very highly from various reputable cigar reviewers online and while my experience was enjoyable I wouldn’t quite put it on the same level as the other reviews. My only assumption (take this with a grain of salt) is the cigars reviewed by me were purchased at local cigar store while the others were given a single cigar at the 2012 IPCPR. From past experience blends do change from the IPCPR to what is sold to retailers on occasion. I had to make a decision between purchasing the Serie V or Serie V Melanio which would I choose? Both of them. They are two different cigars with two different wrappers. They don’t smoke similar in flavor nor look similar in appearance so I feel they fill the needs of different niches. In my limited experience I find the Serie V more enjoyable but I haven’t quite tried the various sizes offered in the Melanio so take that as my initial assessment. While the price point may be higher than most people are comfortable paying I certainly feel it’s a cigar worth trying. I plan to keep maybe a “fiver” on hand to see how they age even though a box would only be a ten count. 4 5 1

Robusto Overall the wrapper was very uniform with a slight oily quality about it. Cold draw was very earthy with some slight cedar undertones. The overall burn of the cigar was slow and even I just the way it should be. Quite a bit of pepper in this stick (I usually prefer more mild bodied smokes) but presented some tasty notes of raisin milk chocolate and that wonderful cedar throughout... Great smoke! 4 5 1
Robusto Beautiful wrapper excellent cap all veins are small. Nice smooth draw but a slight plastic-y flavor. No hint in the lit smoke though. Roasted coffee sweet like molasses. Toasted almond-like note. Halfway in I get a wonderful toasted coconut note. Creaminess just barely shows up Halfway through coconut nice subtle change. Lots of black pepper on the finish. Lingers on the palate. Beautiful. One thing about Oliva cigars. Flawless construction. Every cigar I've ever had of theirs. 4 5 1
Robusto The Oliva Serie V is nothing short of greatness. From the full body to the flawless draw there is very little that can be found wrong with this Nicaraguan smoke. The Sumatra wrapper is seamlessly adhered the filler combination of Habano and Jalapa blend is very smooth. Robusto The Melanio robusto is an excellent cigar. Just opening the box to see ten of these beauties sets the stage for what you're about to enjoy. The wrapper is flawless with a practically invisible seam. I used a Xicar V cutter to open the head. The preflight draw was tough so I performed another cut; making an X. Initial light-up brought excellent flavor with some pepper. This cigar is very similar to the Oliva V only smoother. The flavor stayed excellent throughout the cigar. In fact I enjoyed it so much I had to break out the nub tool to keep from burning my fingers. I'd rate this 5 stars if not for the tough draw. Perhaps a few months in the humidor at 65% will improve it. For now 4-4.5 stars. 4 5 1

Robusto Purchased a box of 10 and I'm thoroughly satisfied. The Oliva Serie V Melanio is among my favorites. Great cigar at a great price JR Cigars even threw in 10 free Oliva cigars with my purchase! (5 serie O robustos 5 Nub CT's). My only complaint is that it says it comes with 2 boveda packs but someone must've forgotten to throw them in when packaging my order. It's a slight complaint and the 10 free cigars makes up for it. I'm happy with my purchase it's just that I don't have a humidor of my own and wanted to keep em as fresh as possible. I'll be purchasing more Melanio's for sure. 5 5 1

Robusto I recently got this in a JRs sampler bundle. I liked it because it is a smaller cigar that I found to not be too overwhelming. It is nice for a quick smoke when you want a cigar but are crunched for time. Also I really liked the construction... held its shape during the smoke better that a lot other cigars that would atart falling apart mid smoke... 4 5 1

Robusto The Melanio robusto is an excellent cigar. Just opening the box to see ten of these beauties sets the stage for what you're about to enjoy. The wrapper is flawless with a practically invisible seam. I used a Xicar V cutter to open the head. The preflight draw was tough so I performed another cut; making an X. Initial light-up brought excellent flavor with some pepper. This cigar is very similar to the Oliva V only smoother. The flavor stayed excellent throughout the cigar. In fact I enjoyed it so much I had to break out the nub tool to keep from burning my fingers. I'd rate this 5 stars if not for the tough draw. Perhaps a few months in the humidor at 65% will improve it. 4 5 1

Robusto If you enjoyed the Oliva V this is essentially very solar except for a few tweaks for what many believe to be for the better. It's not quite as full bodied as its predecessor but it makes up for that by being extremely smooth and a creamier comparative. Well constructed and beautiful to feel and look at its definitely one of olivas best offerings. An even medium/ medium full. I didn't notice that pleasant change in flavor that I usually taste about halfway through most sticks which was a little disappointing but nothing terrible. For me the draw was very good (I used a punch cutter) and stayed that way throughout the length of the stick. There was a decent amount of smoke but not as much as something like a Liga Privada. Robusto This is a very good smoke but it is definitely not the number one cigar the year I personally prefer the EP Carrillo La Historya which is ranked the number to cigar of the year is much better. It's a very strong Cuban ask type of smoke but not much complexity in the flavors some pepperiness to it some woodsiness to it but overall that's just about it. Don't get me wrong this is not a bad cigar but don't believe all the reviews you read 3 5 1

Robusto This particular Oliva is definitely in my top 15 cigars. Me being a Oliva fan anyway maybe I'm just a Homer. But the burn is even and smooth from first toast to final draw. Hints of sweetness on the back end and smooth all the way through on every pull. I'm my opinion this is a great cigar for beginners to start with. All five started decently creamy and matured into burnt coffee by the halfway point. Two of the five had significant construction problems. I wouldn't say "don't buy them." Robusto The earthy smell of the wrap and it’s soft spongy feel was my first pleasantry. After I v-snipped the end and tasted the tip, I knew this was going to be a fine smoke. First draw was excellent, creamy and mild all the way to the last quarter. No pepper but the creamy texture never stopped. This burger has become my favorite after at least twenty different types and wraps. Sadly, I only got a five pack, so I’ll be smoking this sparingly. The longer it sits in my humidor, the creamier it got. Looking forward to my second one in two weeks. This is going to be a regular purchase for me .. 5 5 1

Robusto I got these beauties in a package deal from JR at a price that couldn't be beat. Everything about this stick is first class. The draw was perfect, smoke production, check, taste check++, slow burn, check. The flavors that I got could be best described as smoking the finest Italian leather that's been dipped in the best tasting dark chocolate and sprinkled with exotic nuts. The flavor and strength never changed throughout my 2 hr experience. The first long ash fell off at 3 inches (I was measuring) and I never ashed again...truly remarkable construction. Until this smoke, the Masterblends 3 was my favorite, but that is now down to #2. I'm beginning to think that Oliva, overall, is probably the best cigar company out there that is affordable to mere mortals. I smoked a River Oaks Royal that was a gift (about $30 per) and this Olly is the clear winner of the two. Try these in an auction or package. I think that you'll be back for more. 5 5 1

Robusto This cigar has it all! Great construction, lots of flavor that only gets better as you smoke. Burn is slow and even with a nice tight ash. About an hour and fifteen minutes of great smoking! Good earthy coffee and cream flavors with a spicy nose tickle on the retrohale. The draw is first rate, I was enjoying huge plumes of smoke and got up to refill my coffee and was walking around like Frankenstein for a few minutes, but this cigar is not overpowering, I just got carried away with the effortless draw.
