One brand, one line, two expression, two factories. That was the genius behind the Crowned Heads Coroneta releases in 2024. On one side we have the Habano version, which is a combination of Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, Nicaraguan binder and fillers from Condega, Estelí and Jalapa, Nicaragua. It was produced by Nicaragua American Cigars S.A.
The Maduro is much darker. The blend—Mexican San Andrés wrapper, Ecuadorian Connecticut-seed binder and fillers sourced from the Dominican Republic, Pennsylvania and Nicaragua—is only a small part of the story.
The Coroneta Maduro was produced at what many know as the Tabacalera La Alianza S.A., which is now currently recognized as Casa Carrillo. This, of course, is the epicenter of the E.P. Carrillo empire, which produces a seemingly limitless run of cigars that are rated at the top of the prestigious Cigar Aficionado Top 25 year in and year out. The Cigar Aficionado Hall of Famers, who have produced 16 top-rated cigars through their four-generation collaboration process, did not skimp when it came to the Coroneta Maduro.
Brand co-founder Jon Huber said in a press release announcing its arrival: “The concept of simultaneously introducing one brand in two expressions from two different houses is something entirely first-time for us. The Habano version from NACSA was actually final and production ready back in the Spring of 2022, but we decided to hold it back. Ultimately, we felt so strongly about the Coroneta brand that we tapped the ‘Godfather of Boutique Cigars,’ aka Ernesto Perez-Carrillo, to partner with us on developing the maduro version. I think the Coroneta brand achieves what we excel at, which is, seamlessly blending tradition and history with premium modernity.”
The flavors are ever-evolving, with notes of peppery spice, walnut, chocolate and a bit of cream. There is also a distinct fruity note to the cigar, which is apt considering the branding is inspired by and utilizes design elements of the strawberry leaf. Because of this, the cigar works with the bolder side of your drink collection. For coffee drinkers, that’s a latte. Cognacs and stout beers are also ideal for bringing out the best in this durable and delectable wrapper.
