Top Brands in Cigars
For almost 50 years, JR Alternative Cigars have been one of our best-selling brands with a presence in the humidors of aficionados across the country. Beloved for their affordable prices, consistent flavors, wide selection of sizes and blends, and top-notch construction, JR Alternative Cigars are a favorite among cigar connoisseurs with a tight budget who still want to enjoy a quality smoke.
When JR Cigar first opened for business in 1971, it was operated out of a small storefront on the corner of 5th Avenue and 45th Street in the heart of Manhattan. Room for displays is at a premium in a space that is 14 feet wide and 21 feet long, so JR Cigar founder Lew Rothman commissioned a fixture maker to make two large showcases to display a large cigar selection to passersby through the front window.
Rothman asked if Blumenthal could send him Punch and Hoyo in bundles instead of boxes, and nude without any bands on the cigars. Not only could Blumenthal fulfill the request, but he would sell the nude bundles to Rothman for less than the boxed and banded cigars. Instead of charging customers the same price, Rothman passed the savings on to them and JR Alternatives to Punch and Hoyo were born!
Back then, JR Alternative Cigars were the exact same cigars as the boxed and banded cigars, but the cigar boom of the 1990s changed everything. Demand for premium handmade cigars soared, and supply just could not keep up. Cigar makers would no longer sell the nude bundles of their name-brand cigars to JR at a discount, and a new source for the production of JR Alternative Cigars needed to be found.
When the cigar boom ended in the late 1990s and early 2000s, cigar makers had tons of excess tobacco stored up as demand sharply dropped, and JR Alternative Cigars were the perfect way to turn their inflated tobacco inventories into reasonably priced cigars.
Today, JR Alternative Cigars are produced at some of the most famous cigar factories in the Dominican Republic, Honduras, and Nicaragua. This includes the likes of Flor de Copan and Tabacalera de Garcia, homes of famous brands such as Montecristo, H. Upmann, and Romeo y Julieta. You can find JR Alternative Cigars in a wide range of blends and sizes to fit any thrifty aficionado’s palate.
To find all of your favorite classic alternatives, look no further than the original JR Alternatives. Coming from the major cigar making trio of Honduras, the Dominican Republic, and Nicaragua, here you can find alternatives to household names like Montecristo, Partagas, Don Diego, Nub, and many more.
With JR Honduran / Nicaraguan Alternatives, you can narrow down your search to the most popular Nicaraguan and Honduran brands out there. You can enjoy the rich earthy flavors of Honduran brands like El Rey del Mundo and Punch, as well as the zesty spiciness of Nicaraguan favorites including Perdomo, CAO, and La Gloria Cubana.
If you want to enjoy flavors akin to those from the forbidden island of Cuba for a far more affordable price than buying a plane ticket, JR Cuban Alternative cigars are going to be right at home in your humidor. Blended to capture the taste and style of those old-school Cuban greats, you can enjoy legends such as Bolivar, Sancho Panza, Cohiba, and the classic Montecristo No. 2.

Founded in 1875 Cuba and named after the titular characters in Shakespeare’s most famous tragedy, Romeo y Julieta Cigars are one of the most recognizable and well-known premium cigar brands ever made. A favorite of the legendary statesman Winston Churchill, Romeo y Julieta Cigars are the favorite of aficionados across the country.
Founded by Inocencio Alvares and Manin Garcia in 1875, Romeo y Julieta Cigars were off to a hot start from the beginning. Between 1885 and 1900, Romeo y Julieta cigars won countless awards and accolades in numerous competitions, which are still proudly displayed on every box of Romeo y Julieta Cigars. However, Romeo y Julieta Cigars would soon see a meteoric rise in popularity around the world.
In 1903, Alvares and Garcia sold Romeo y Julieta Cigars to Jose “Pepin” Rodriguez Fernandez. Fernandez was the former boss of the famed Cabanas factory, and he was obsessed with Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet. A man of high class and a socialite, Fernandez traveled all across the United States and Europe promoting Romeo y Julieta Cigars to the world’s wealthy. He even had a racing horse named Julieta.
With Romeo y Julieta Cigars’ popularity among members of high society, many customers had requested Fernandez create custom bands for their cigars. Over 20,000 unique and personalized bands were made for wealthy clients around the world, including Winston Churchill. Churchill was such a huge and public fan of Romeo y Julieta Cigars its main size was renamed in his honor, creating the famous Churchill vitola.
Fernandez would never see the turmoil that was soon to come for his beloved Romeo y Julieta Cigars. He passed in 1954 at the age of 88, and ownership passed on to his son. Five years later, Castro’s Communist Revolution swept across Cuba, and Romeo y Julieta Cigars, along with countless other Cuban brands, were nationalized by the Cuban government.
The younger Fernandez would keep the Romeo y Julieta Cigars trademark going in the U.S. until his passing in 1978, when the brand came under the purview of Hollco-Rohr. Romeo y Julieta Cigars were then made by the Quesada family in the Dominican Republic at MATASA for nearly 20 years. In 1998, Hollco-Rohr was spun into Altadis U.S.A. and was moved to Tabacalera de Garcia, where it remains today.
Although Romeo y Julieta Cigars has changed hands a few times, it still retains that same dedication to quality and luxury that made it a favorite among aficionados across the country. Today, they are blended by Rafael Nodal and the talented Grupo de Maestros.
Some of their top lines include the Romeo y Julieta 1875, the Reserva Real, and Romeo y Julieta Crafted by AJ Fernandez all blended to please the most discerning palates.
Still unsure what to choose? We have come up with a fantastic Romeo y Julieta buying guide to help you pick your favorite blend. But whichever one you choose, make sure you order your Romeo y Julieta Cigars online right here with JR.

Cigar Samplers are a great way for both novice and experienced aficionados to expand their palates with new blends at an affordable price. If you have never tried a particular cigar blend before, it can be a risky investment buying a full box of cigars. If they are not fit for your palate, you would be stuck with a humidor full of a bunch of cigars you do not like and an empty wallet.
Rather than take the risk with a pricey box of cigars, you can try several cigars at a time with a Cigar Sampler. A Cigar Sampler is an assortment of anywhere between 3, 10, 20, or even more than 50 cigars of different brands, blends, and sizes. With so many options on the market today, there are countless combinations and assortments to choose from.
The most basic kind of cigar sampler you can find is akin to a tasting or a flight. Have you ever wondered what the best size of a particular blend is? If so, a sampler such as the Padron Family Reserve Gift Pack or Romeo y Julieta 1875 Tubo Collection would be an excellent choice. Each of these samplers focuses on a specific blend and the most popular sizes of offered, allowing you to discover your favorite vitolas.
More commonly, you will find cigar samplers from a certain brand showing off the array of blends under its umbrella. The biggest and most famous brands on the market all have samplers that demonstrate that brand’s portfolio, including household names like Montecristo, Oliva, Rocky Patel, Romeo y Julieta, Ashton, and several more.
You can choose your cigar samplers based on country of origin, so you get a better taste for the different blending and rolling styles employed by each country. For example, you can get a full range of flavors from the Dominican Master Sampler, with each cigar in the assortment made at the legendary Tabacalera de Garcia in the Dominican Republic.
You can also find cigar samplers based on the strength of the cigars in the assortment, so if you are a newcomer into the cigar hobby you can enjoy a smorgasbord of delicious mellow or mellow-medium bodied cigars. Those with seasoned palates can enjoy a smattering of full-bodied cigars to discover new blends and flavor profiles.
With so many options, it can be intimidating to find the right cigar sampler for you, so we created these handy sampler buying guides to help you find your perfect cigar sampler. In any case, you will enjoy some big-time savings by adding a cigar sampler to your humidor than trying a bunch of different boxes. Get your Cigar Sampler delivered directly to your home by ordering them online right here at JR Cigar!

A true classic in every sense, Baccarat Cigars are some of the most popular premiums on the market today, led by its flagship lines’ sweet gum cap that has captured the palates of aficionados for generations. With a penchant for providing smooth and top-quality Honduran blends for an affordable price, Baccarat Cigars have a presence in the humidors of countless aficionados.
Baccarat Cigars were first introduced by the Eiroa family back in 1989. Julio Eiroa, father of the now-famous cigar master Christian Eiroa, is a prolific farmer and cigar maker in Honduras and oversaw the exceptional rise in Baccarat Cigars. The brand’s affordable price, delicious yet smooth flavors, and sweetened cap harkening back to old-school Cuban cigars won the favor of American cigar smokers.
As the 1990s cigar boom came into full swing, the popularity of Baccarat Cigars exploded. Production went from a few hundred thousand cigars to a whopping 3 million cigars per year. Around the same time, the Eiroa family also procured the rights to the Camacho brand, diversifying the family’s portfolio.
When the boom eventually busted at the turn of the millennium, it was Baccarat Cigars that kept the Eiroa family, and its fledgling Camacho brand, in business as the modern cigar market took shape.
Baccarat Cigars proved to be an exceptionally popular choice among thrifty aficionados, especially those enthusiasts who were just getting started on their cigar journey. In 2008, Baccarat attracted the attention of Davidoff Cigars, and was sold to Davidoff along with the Camacho brand. Baccarat Cigars are still made at the Camacho factory in Honduras to this day.
Today, the portfolio of Baccarat Cigars can fit the preferences of any connoisseur. The famous original Baccarat is an all-audiences classic built with a core of aged Honduran Cuban-seed long fillers and Mexican binder with your choice of either a Connecticut Shade or Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper. Finished with their signature sweetened cap, Baccarat delivers a mellow medley of cream, toast, and cedar, and the Broadleaf version has a mellow-medium body with added nuances of chocolate, and hints of pepper.
Are you looking for a little more kick from your stick? Then Baccarat Nicaragua has you covered. A long-awaited line extension to its enormously popular Honduran counterpart, Baccarat Nicaragua cigars are a line of Habano wrapped beauties that feature a Sumatra binder and a core of perfectly aged Nicaraguan long fillers. Medium in body, Baccarat Nicaragua coats the palate with rich flavors of leather, toast, cedar, sweet spice, and wood. Baccarat’s latest achievement was creating the company’s very first Barber Pole style cigar. What makes a barber pole a real treat for cigar connoisseurs is its intricate taste. Once lit, both the darker and lighter wrapper leaves release their own distinct flavors at the same time and combine to create an unforgettable and flavorful experience.
In the case of Baccarat Barber Pole cigars, the dual wrappers consist of a dark and oily Connecticut Broadleaf maduro wrapper expertly intertwined with a lighter Connecticut Shade leaf. Underneath this striking dual crown is the finest aged Honduran long filler tobacco, held together by a tasty Mexican binder. This amounts to one of the most complex and captivating blends that Baccarat has ever made.
The bottom line is no matter which blend from Baccarat Cigars you choose, you do not need to leave it up to luck to get a top-notch smoking experience at some of the best prices around. Order your Baccarat Cigars with JR today!
